Rosas Secas - Dry Roses

La semana pasada sé que no publiqué ni una entrada, la verdad es que he estado inmersa en mi búsqueda de trabao y sobretodo en mi pasión en esta vida, escribir, que es lo que de verdad quiero. Si no puede ser, que no sea porque no lo he intentado, ¿no? A veces hay que poner en orden las prioridades y en este caso mi carrera y centrarme en mí misma ha ganado. Pero... en realidad si que tenía un proyecto a medio cocer...

Last week I know I didn't publish anything, in fact I've been focused on looking for a job and of course, on my passion in this life,writting, that's actually what I want to live for. If it can't be... it won't be because I dind't try, right? Sometimes you need to sort out your priorities and in this case my carreer and myself beat the rest. But actually I had a proyect on the way... 

Hace unas semanas recibí flores de mi novio por haber acabado el master, me hicieron tanta ilusión que quise conservarlas para siempre. Así que acudí a Pinterest para que me ayudase a conseguirlo y por supuesto, tuve éxito. 

Some weeks ago I received flowers from my boyfriend as a gift for finishing my masters, I was so happy with them that I wanted to preserve them forever. I went on a Pinterest quest to achieve it and of course, I succeeded. 

El primer paso era buscar cómo secar rosas. Lo único que había secado antes eran hojas y flores pequeñas en libros, pero quedaban planas y no me hacía demasiada ilusión que mis rosas quedaran así, quería verlas con volumen. Vi que había varios métodos, uno que era incluso meter las rosas al horno durante unas horas, per a parte de parecerme un derroche de energía, me parece hasta peligroso, especialmente con un horno de gas como el de mi casa. 

The first step was looking "how to dry roses". The only thing I dried before were leaves and small flowers inside a book, but they came out flat and I didn't want my roses that way, I wanted them with volume. I saw several methodes, one of them was baking them for several hours in the oven but apart from being a waste of energy seems dangerous, specially with a gas oven like in my house. 

Al final me decidí por un método lento pero seguro, es el básico pero mejorado. Leí en un montón de sitios que las rosas simplemente se colgaban boca abajo, pero en otra página vi que era mejor además que las envolvieras en papel de periódico para que absorviera mejor la humedad y que estuvieran a oscuras y en un lugar fresco. Yo las tuve metidas en el aseo, era raro, ya me entendéis, pero en poco más de una semana mis flores ya estaban secas y preciosas.

Finally I picked an slow but safe methode, it's the basic one but improved. I read in lot of sites that you just need to put the flowers hanging downwards, but in another site I saw that it't better that also you wrap them in newspaper sheets to absorb humidity and to put them in a dark fresh place. I had them in my toilet, it was kind of weird, but in a bit more than a week my flowers were dry and beautiful. 

Tenéis que tocar las rosas cada día hasta comprobar que están completamente secas, que suene como a arrugar un folio, que no esté blando, si no se van a estropear, mejor dejarlas más tiempo si no estás seguro. Una vez tuve las rosas tenía que pensar qué hacer con ellas, porque tener flores secas en un jarrón no acababa de convencerme, iba a parecer que soy demasiado vaga para tirarlas, que ya es decir. Así que nuevamente Pinterest me ayudó. 

You have to touch the flowers every day until they are completelly dry, they have to sound like creasing paper, it shouldn't be soft, otherwise they will rote. It's better to leave them longer if you're not sure. Once I had the roses I needed to think what to do with them, I didn't like the idea of having the dried roses in a flower pot, it would look like I'm too lazy to put them away... So again, Pinterest helped me.

La disposición en forma de corazón me parece demasiado cursi, así que me decidí por ponerlas de una forma más sencilla. Por supuesto cambié los colores también. Como recordatorio de que Pinterest es para inspirarse, no para copiar... 

I hated the heart shaped distribution, too romantic and sickly sweet, so I decided to put them in a more simple way. I changed the colours as well, of course. Just to remind myself and everyone else that Pinterest is not to copy everything but get inspired by...

Tampoco quería gastarme dinero en uno de esos marcos-caja, no sé cómo se llaman. Así que me las apañé para hacerlo por mí misma de una forma muy sencilla. 

I didn't want to spend money on one of those boxed frames, I don't know how are they called. So I had to do it myself with a bit of imagination, it was very simple at the end. 

Necesitarás / You'll need

Un marco de fotos del tamaño que quieras / A photo frame, measures not important

Cartón / Cardboard

Papel adhesivo o de regalo / Contact paper or wrapping paper

Pegamento / Glue

Tijeras / Scissors

Cinta adhesiva / Tape

1. Separar el marco en partes. Pegar el cristal al marco y dejar secar. Envolver en papel adhesivo o papel de regalo el fondo. Si utilizáis papel adhesivo, cuidado, a mí me quedaron unas arrugas que luego tapé con las rosas, pero mejor que os quede liso. 

Separate the frame in parts. Glue the crystal part to the frame and let it dry. Wrap the background with contact paper or wrapping paper. If you use contact paper, careful, I had some creases that later were covered with the roses, but it's better if you get a plain surface. 

2. Cortar las rosas justo bajo la "cabeza"

Cut the roses right below the "head"

3. Haz pruebas y coloca las rosas de la forma que más te guste. Cuando encuentres la combinación perfecta, pégalas al fondo. 

Try and sort the roses the way you like them most. When you fins the perfect combination glue them to the background.

4. El siguiente paso es medir el punto más alto que alcanzan las rosas y dejar unos milímetros de margen para estar seguros. En mi caso la medida elegida fueron 4cm. Corta tiras de cartón del largo y ancho que necesites. Por ejemplo:

Medida del marco: 30x20 cm

Alto: 4cm

Tiras necesarias: 30x4 cm (x2) 20x4 cm (x2)

The next step is meassuring the highest point of your roses and leave couple of milimeters to be sure. In my case it was 4cm in total. Cut cardboard strips with the meassurements you need. For example:

Frame: 30x20 cm

Height: 4cm

Needed strips: 30x4 cm (x2) 20x4 cm (x2)

Y pégalas al marco y a la base. Puedes ayudarte de cinta aislante para asegurar las esquinas. 

Glue them to the fram and the background. You can use tape to strenghten the corners. 

Al final también puse dos tallos con espinas en los lados porque quedaba demasiado vacío. También envolví los bordes de fuera para tapar la cinta aislante. Dentro me gustó cómo quedaba el color del cartón. Este es el resultado final.

Finally I added two stems on the sides because I felt it was a bit empty. I also wrapped the outside of the cardboard to cover the tape. I liked the cardboard colour inside. This is the final result. 

Ahora sólo necesito colgarlo en mi habitación. Estoy muy contenta con el resultado.

Now I just need to hang it in my room. I'm very happy with the result.
